What’s Included in the Price
Every battery replacement at DeChronos is more than a cell swap. Our master watchmaker:
- Inspects and replaces case-back gaskets if worn or hardened
- Pressure-tests dive watches to factory depth rating after battery replacement
- Checks the movement for signs of battery leakage or corrosion before installing the new cell
- Sets time, date, day, and any complications after installation
- Provides a 24-month warranty on the battery cell
- Issues a written service note confirming battery cell batch and pressure-test result
Cell prices themselves are RM 5 to RM 35 depending on chemistry and brand. The premium above cell cost covers workshop time, expertise, gasket materials, and warranty.
Factors That Affect Cost
Brand of the Watch
Different brands require different OEM-spec tools. A Rolex Cellini battery replacement requires Rolex-specific pressure back tools; a Casio battery replacement requires a generic case-back knife.
Case Construction
Snap-back cases are the cheapest to service. Screw-back cases require the case to be opened under controlled torque and gasket compression. Dive-watch screw-down crowns add another inspection step.
Complication Set
Chronograph battery replacement typically means servicing the chronograph module separately. Multi-time zone watches (GMT, worldtimer) require additional reset of the complication. Alarm watches need alarm-volume testing.
Water Resistance Certification
Every dive watch we service gets pressure tested. Some watches (e.g. mid-range Tissot Quartz Chronos) do not require pressure testing but we still recommend it.
Re-Seal of Movement Cavity
Some older movements have exposed compartment seals that degrade over time. If the seal is cracked or hardened, we replace it as part of the service. This adds RM 80 to RM 150 to the battery replacement cost.
Is Cheaper Service Worth It?
Watch owners in KL sometimes look for cheaper battery replacement services. Here is what to consider:
- Generic batteries — Off-brand cells can leak and damage the movement. Cell replacement cost might save RM 50 but if it damages a cal. 3135 quartz, repair is RM 800+.
- OEM gasket seals — Authorised dealers use brand-specific gaskets. Aftermarket service uses generic seals that may not meet original water resistance specs.
- Pressure testing — Required for any watch with a screw-down case back or crown. Skipping pressure testing means accepting unknown water resistance.
We see weekly customers who brought their luxury watch to a cheaper service and now need a movement replacement due to a leaky battery or failed water resistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge by brand tier?
No — we charge by service category, not by brand prestige. A premium aftermarket band on a Tissot costs the same as a generic band on a Rolex Cellini in terms of service time. We publish pricing transparently.
Will you buy my watch’s battery separately?
No — we install batteries we supply. The cell warranty we provide covers installation by our watchmaker under our procedures. We do not warranty cells supplied by the customer.
Can I bring my own battery?
We strongly discourage it. Off-brand batteries have a higher leak rate and may not match the chemistry your movement requires. Premium batteries (Renata, Maxell, Energizer) supplied through authorised channels have leak rates below 0.1%.
What if my battery is dead and won’t hold charge?
A new battery will last 2 to 4 years on standard quartz. If the watch is losing time more than 30 seconds a day after a new battery, the movement itself may need service. We can identify this during battery replacement.
