Watch Verification & Authentication
Buying or inheriting a luxury watch? Selling one and need proof of authenticity? Our watch verification and authentication service in Kuala Lumpur provides independent, expert inspection of any timepiece — without the conflict of interest that comes from a dealer who’s also buying from you.
At DeChronos, every verification is personally conducted by founder and master watchmaker Simon Leong, with over 30 years of experience servicing and inspecting more than 100,000 luxury timepieces. You receive a written authentication report with photo documentation suitable for insurance, dispute resolution, resale, or personal peace of mind.
What Is Watch Verification?
Watch verification (also called authentication) is a formal examination of a timepiece by a qualified independent expert to confirm its authenticity, originality, and condition. It is fundamentally different from:
- Watch valuation — estimating market value, which does not verify authenticity
- Watch service — repairing a movement, which assumes the piece is already authentic
- Appraisal — a financial document for tax or insurance purposes, often based on a verification
A proper verification opens the case back, inspects the movement, cross-references serial numbers with manufacturer records, and produces a written opinion. It is the only way to be certain a luxury watch is genuine — especially important when buying pre-owned, inheriting an estate piece, or settling an insurance claim.
When You Need Watch Verification
| Situation | Why Verification Matters |
|---|---|
| Buying from a private seller | Avoid paying authentic prices for a counterfeit, modified, or stolen piece |
| Buying from a grey-market dealer | Confirm the watch hasn’t been “Frankensteined” with non-original parts |
| Selling your watch | A written report from an independent expert increases buyer confidence and sale price |
| Insurance setup or claim | Insurers increasingly require written authentication before issuing or paying out on policies for luxury watches |
| Inheritance or estate | Confirm value and authenticity before distributing among heirs or selling |
| Acquired overseas | Verify a watch bought abroad meets Malaysian market standards and isn’t restricted |
What We Check
Our verification covers every dimension of a luxury timepiece — external, mechanical, and documentary. A standard verification takes 1 to 3 days and includes physical inspection, movement opening, and detailed report writing.
External Inspection
- Case — original shape, lug dimensions, finishing consistency (brushed vs polished), reference-specific proportions
- Dial — printing quality, font correctness, lume application, date wheel alignment, logo placement
- Hands — shape, length, lume fill, finishing (brushed, polished, blued)
- Crown, pushers, bezel — correct shape, engravings, insert materials (aluminium vs Cerachrom)
- Crystal — sapphire vs mineral, AR coating, Cyclops magnification (Rolex)
- Bracelet and clasp — end-link compatibility, clasp engravings, original-style finishing
Reference and Serial Verification
- Case-back serial numbers — match the reference and production year per manufacturer records
- Movement numbers — cross-reference against calibre-specific ranges
- Reference numbers — confirm the model designation matches the case dimensions and features
- Hallmarks and stamps — country of origin, gold/platinum markings where applicable
Movement Inspection
- Calibre identification — confirm the installed movement is correct for the reference (a frequently-counterfeited weak point on luxury watches)
- Component originality — balance wheel, escapement, bridge decoration, jewel count, plate markings
- Service history markers — original finishing vs service replacement components
- Functional testing — amplitude, rate accuracy, power reserve, calendar mechanism function
Provenance and Documentation Review
- Original box and papers — match the watch’s reference and serial; verify holographic stickers where applicable
- Warranty cards — authenticity, dealer stamp, date consistency
- Service records — authorized service centre stamps, date continuity
- Purchase documentation — bill of sale, customs declarations, original receipt where available
The Authentication Report
Every verification concludes with a bound, signed 1–3 page report including:
- High-resolution photographs of the case, dial, hands, crown, case back, and movement
- Reference and serial number documentation
- Component originality summary (original vs service-replaced vs aftermarket)
- Mechanical performance data (timing rate, amplitude, power reserve)
- Final verdict: Authentic / Authentic with modifications / Inconclusive / Not authentic
- Master watchmaker signature and date
- Recommendation for any service work identified during inspection
The report is suitable for sharing with insurers, presenting to buyers, or keeping for personal records. We retain a copy for 24 months in case you need to reference it later.
Brands We Authenticate
We verify all major Swiss, Japanese, and German luxury watch brands. The brands we are most frequently asked to authenticate in Kuala Lumpur include:
Rolex · Patek Philippe · Omega · Cartier · Tudor · Hublot · Breitling · Tag Heuer · IWC · Longines
For brands not listed above — including Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Panerai, and other independent makers — please contact us. We authenticate every recognised luxury brand.
Our Verification Process
- Submit your watch. Bring it to any of our 3 KL locations, or ship it to us with prepaid courier. We recommend including any original box, papers, and prior service records you have available.
- Hands-on inspection. Master watchmaker Simon Leong personally conducts the inspection, opening the case back, identifying the calibre, and cross-referencing manufacturer records.
- Written report. You receive a detailed report within 1 to 3 business days with photographs, findings, and a final verdict.
- Optional consultation. If your report raises questions — modifications found, ambiguous paperwork, valuation questions — you can book a 15-minute phone or in-person consultation with Simon to walk through the findings.
Why Use DeChronos for Watch Verification?
| vs. Other Options | What Makes Us Different |
|---|---|
| vs. Online authentication services | We conduct a hands-on physical inspection, including opening the case. Online services can only assess external photos and often miss counterfeits that pass an external check. |
| vs. Brand-authorised service centres | Authorised centres typically only authenticate their own brand and refuse third-party watches. We accept all brands and all conditions. |
| vs. Watch dealer who’s also selling | Dealers have an obvious conflict of interest when authenticating a watch they’re trying to sell you. As an independent shop, we don’t buy the watches we authenticate. |
| vs. Relying on the seller’s word | A written authentication report from an independent master watchmaker carries weight in disputes, returns, insurance claims, and resale negotiations in a way that verbal assurance never does. |
| vs. Generic appraisal | A bank or insurance appraisal typically states value, not authenticity. We document originality component by component. |
